I took this picture while staying at the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando. He was hanging around the pool enjoying the music, eating geckos and watching the ladies...

Very nice portrait, Gail. Great color, fine feather detail, and real nice BG.
Do you have any shots of him eating geckos? :bg3:

The first time I saw him I was swimming in the pool and he was eating a gecko while on the edge of the pool. He washed down the gecko with pool water.
As a rule I always have my camera close at hand but I refrain from taking it IN the pool!:bg3:

Gail:

Certainly a different spot to look for wading birds!

I like his trailing head plumes, OOF background.

Long necked birds are often a compositional challenge in close ups. If you have more of the neck or upper torso, I might try a vertical with less to the left.

A sliver more rotation our way would make him more of an engaging subject.

Interesting that he drank pool water :bg3:

Cheers

Nice opportunity to have it hanging around the pool area! Nice BG, and good details throughout. Fill-flash, and a slightly better HA would have helped here. Did you take any in-camera verticals too?

No, I didn't. He was always moving and I never trust my HH vertical (i don't have a battery grip for the 7D)

Nice poolside capture. :bg3: A vertical is a nice suggestion and a tad more angle towards the viewer would also be preferable like Daniel mentioned. I do like the clean BGD and the head plumes.

Hi Gail,
Nice detail, exposure and lovely background. I agree with the comments about head angle and a try with a vertical may have been worth it.
