This is the bird my brother (Joe Robinson) and his wife saw at a camp site in St. Petersburg: Black-hooded parakeet, also known as Nanday Parakeet. Wikipedia lists one of the known habitats as St. Petersburg. If that link does'nt work just google it.

The Nanday Conure and the Black-hooded parakeet are two different species but are often confused.

Bill, FYI your link says they are two names for the same species and that the other species is Black-capped Conure.

Nandays have been nesting in Florida for quite some time. I saw them in Dade County back in the early 1990s. I believe there is (or was) talk about possibly accepting them as established, but I don't know if there is current consensus on that view.

My apologies :e3...you are both very correct...I was confusing Black-capped Parakeet (Pyrrhura rupicola) with the Black-hooded Parakeet or Nanday Conure (Nandayus nenday).

I have been following a flock of these birds for about three years now. They live in a canyon just north of Malibu (Sycamore Canyon for those of you who know the area). They are very cool birds. If I may add an image... They fit in perfectly with the foliage here and it's no mystery why they stay and flourish. They absolutely love this sugar bush.

Thanks for posting this Jeff!
