The other day I went to my local inlet to test the 1D Mark III I had purchase and was able to get this image of a Little Blue Heron with the ocean as the BG.

1d MK III, 300 f/4, 1/1000 at f/5.6, Manual Mode, Evaluative Metered, ISO 400, Raw, HH, Small crop and cleaned up some specular highlights on bill.

Sharp with a wonderful head angle. Love the raised crest. And of course the BKGR. Feathers look a tad over-sharpened.

Next to do: get one just like this with the ultramarine lores in full breeding plumage. Been trying for 20 years w/o success.

Very very nice. The HA draws you into the image, very engaging. This bird has a lovley colour to it.TFS

Agreed the feathers look a little oversharpened from this side on the world.

Well done Don! I can't help but feel that I'd like to see the heron a little higher in the frame, but I like it as is too.

Lovely capture, Don. You are going to love the 1D3, esp for BIF.

Good angled pose with a thousand yard stare. :w3 The raised crest adds interest, and congrats on your new toy.

Don, what a clean shot. great details, excellent exp. and loved the crest and the BG. Shooting at that close distance must have been fun.

Usually, when I get that close to egrets/herons, I stop down to f/6.3 or 7.1 (depending on light and BG distance) as the head turn brings their bill tip and crest out of the focal plane quickly.
