I decided to spend the evening yesterday trying to get few song birds and came back with few! Taken at Don Edwards NWR, the settings were
7D, Sigma 50-500mm @500mm on Gitzo/Mongoose
1/800 sec, f/6.3 Mode: Av, Evaluative, ISO: 800
All C&C are welcome...

nice pose and BG, bird looks a bit soft to me, maybe more sharpening?

I like the pose. The repost is certainly sharper. To me, the bird looks a bit overexposed.

Repost much better. Might try a bit de-SAT. Even with the light from the right, taking a step to the left might have been a good choice; it would have avoided the merge with the pretty branch and made it easier to get rid of the plain twig.
Will I become a one-handed bird photographer? See here (http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2011/05/20/optimism-increasing-why-bend-the-lens-2/).

Hi Artie, thanks a lot. I actually did the reverse!... here is the one with a bit of de-saturation. I was interested to see if the bg is more of a distraction or part of the composition and you answered it :S3:

Better--perhaps just a bit darker overall now. I am getting OK typing with two hands even with a fat bandage on the left middle finger. Thanks again for your note.
