My local astronomy club sent this out a while back. Very cool and remarkable job for the equipment used. Just think, this is still only about 10% of the total stars in our average, small galaxy. Ours is just one in roughly 200 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Yes, very impressive. Especially considering he did it with 8-megapixel CCDs and multiple exposures with different color filters. The sensors had 16 electron read noise. Seems like it would have been easier with a 20+ megapixel DSLR. (Read noise on the 5D Mark II is under 4 electrons.) Or medium format cameras.

Still very very impressive. And a good excuse to take a year off and travel.:c3:
