Reddish Egret Leaving the Marsh

Early AM. This egret landed, did a couple of passes looking for food, didn't like it and took off for happier hunting grounds.
Canon 1D Mark III, 70-200+1.4
ISO 640, f/4.5, 1/1250 handheld

Susan, I like the take off posture with a good wing position. The early morning has given you lovely warm light and colours. I find the Heron a bit central, and would maybe move him back to the right. Looking at the ripples, I would maybe give the image a slight CCW rotation.

The light is really nice and helps separate the bird from the BG.
Although the body is angle towards us, to my eye the head is turned back away from us a bit.

I agree about him being to centered. I think a small crop from the right would work, and if you have a bit more on the left, add that back in if not too busy.

Light on the bird is beautiful. The BG compliments the image and the fine composition pulls it all together although a little more room in front would probably make it even better.

Had you covered Stu :). And yes, too centered with a less than ideal head angle. I do love the nice underwing detail.

I don't feel there is a problem with the bird being centred as the habitat actually almost dictates this framing. I am more concerned with the IQ which is not great. I would not use the Canon 70-200 with the x1.4 converter for flight shots as I don't think IQ is great with this combo for this purpose. I would also suggest faster ss for flight. 1/1250 is usually not enough IMHO.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Yes, definitely. IQ is not as good as the other Canon lenses like the 300 f2.8, 300 f4, 400 f5.6, 500 f4, 500 f4 +x1.4.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

I own the Canon 70-200 f2.8 and it is a nice lens for static shots but not for BIF (being so short) and not when coupled with a converter.<o:p></o:p>
I guess IQ is a subjective issue so I should have mentioned - for my taste and standards.<o:p></o:p>

Susan, if you would like to have a really wonderful lens for BIF which will give you the best possible IQ, fast focusing and it's light and not expensive - get the Canon 400 f5.6 - probably the best lens for BIF in the market.

Not at all. I have been using, loving, and raving about the 70-200 II without but mostly with the 1.4X III and the 2XIII TCs. I have been posting images here and on the blog for many months. IQ looks fine to me.

If you read my first comment in this matter - I am referring to this combo for BIF. If you think this is a good combo for BIF than we will have to agree to disagree. How on earth can anyone compare IQ obtained by using prime lenses like the Canon 300 f2.8 or Canon 400 f5.6 with this inferiour combo - that's beyond me.:e3
