I recently incorporated a 2.0 TC III into my 7D, 500mm combo. Manually focusing from a kayak is very hard, but I was getting the hang of it toward the end of the day.

7D, 500mm
1/1000sec
1000mm
f/8
ISO 400
Av mode, -1/3 eV Comp

Very nice Colin, nice whites and looks like good sharpness. Tough working in MF in that sort of situation, I find it very frustrating sometimes and have given up on it (I seem to get a headache after each MF session :e3).

Impressive focusing and sharpness without a tripod. I could not recommend that technique but you pulled it off here. The bird is looking away from the line of its body, in effect, it is turned away from us. I would, thus, prefer that the head be turned a bit more toward us, Not to worry though, some our experienced members prefer poor head angles to good ones.

Paul, I dealt with the focusing issue because I was so pleased so get full frame shots that would normally be nowhere near full frame! It helped me endure the manual focus issue.

Artie, I WAS using a tripod- I put an Induro CT314 in the kayak, mount the 500mm to a gimbal head and go with it! It's a lot fun. Thanks for your opinion on the head angle.
