Black crowned night heron portrait

40D. 400f5.6L at f/7.1. iso 400. 1/400s. evaluative + 1. hand-held. full-frame.

Heron was inside a small canal with steep bank...I did not go lower as there was some ugly vegetation behind the bird. All C&C welcome and appreciated.

Very good details, and the composition with the diagonal made with the wing and the body is a good choice.

It would have been, perhaps, more interesting with the beak opened but it's a heron:t3.
The top left corner is a bit too light, but I won't say that it need to be darkened too much(just a little) as I prefer authentic pictures.

Fantastic IQ and detail...Exp looks spot on...Upper left corner is a bit light, not sure if your ethics allow but maybe a clone to even it out....Lovely stuff

Thx. The ULC does bother me a lot as well. There was no way to avoid it. Infact most of the BG was that way. I chose the shooting position carefully to get the maximum amount of green I could against the bird.

The higher than preferred shooting angle is not noticeable at all.

I like the nice space left around the bird as it feels right.

IQ is top notch.

Good portrait...just the right amount of "shoulder" showing. The red eye looks great surrounded by all the greens. I'm with the others for the ULC. Borrowing some green via the clone tool at 30-40% opacity should cover just enough brightness and add just enough green to make it look good IMO. Perhaps just a kiss of fill would have done good too.
