A male Gelada displaying his "grin" to a female. This kind of display rarely takes more than a second, and it's not clear whether it always constitutes a threat. But it IS scary.
It was overcast and dark, a lot of PP to bring it out.

Simien Mountains, Ethiopia.

I agree with you scary comment. I would not want to get too close to one of these if thats how they great each other.

Great timing Ignacio, as you mentioned its all over in a second.

Good behavioural shot Ignacio given the time you had and you have done well with the PP to get the detail out in the face. Personally I would have liked to see all of the female Gelada at the foot of the image, but guess that is the penalty of a fixed lens. :w3

Great look you captured with your quick reflexes. I too would have preferred to have had the female completely in the image. But all in all a great effort. I like the look of the trees in the BG as well.

Hi Ignacio, I really like the intensity of the geladas expression, and also the vegetation in the BG, adds a lot to the feel of the image. Agree with others comments about more of the female baboon. Nice image and an unusual one for us here..
cheers

Ignacio , well done considering the conditions. The male stands out well from the BG and I like the sense of environment with the OOF background. As mentioned the entire female would have completed the picture.

I feel exactly the same and am bewildered by the comments on the female?

I do not think the whole female is necessary. In fact I think if she was completely in the frame she would detract from the primary subject.

It seems my comment has perhaps caused some confusion, once again I am in comete agreement with your latest comment

Thank you all for your comments. I wish I could say I went for the male dominating the scene instead of the whole female, but the truth is I just shot in the heat of the moment...:e3

Anyway, I do agree that the female is somewhat secondary here.

Best,
