Female Great Horned Owl with 3 week old chick.

Tough shooting conditions as the settings will attest. If the adults eyes look funky it's because she is reverse cross eyed.

Smoothed out and desaturated the background.

MKIII, EF500@1.4x, 1/125, f/6.3, ISO 1600, flash with B.B. -1/3 F.E.C., Back of my pick up.

Subject matter is fantastic Mike, but I have some reservations about the IQ. In addition to the high ISO, was this a big crop?

Mike:

Good job with DOF under difficult lighting conditions. LIke the title.

When the eye turns in, its called esotropia. Because the pupil is also irregular, do wonder if this eye has had an old injury, which often leads to strabismus(misalignment of the eyes)

Cheers

Love the way you have framed this one and the story it tells. Colors and IQ look pretty good to me considering the conditions. I think I would add a little black to the owlet's pupil.

Lovely capture of something we don't often see.

Poses are excellent and good for you to get the photo., and family look quite relaxed about it all.

That's a fine picture, Mike. Did you try processing with the background just a bit less smoothed?
