And Now For Something Completely Different

There's nothing new, it's all been done. Right?
This is something I haven't seen before and wanted to share.

Driven by my need to create and more conventional Brown Pelican images than one person should have. I decided to "get stupid".

Nikon D700
Sigma 300-800mm @ 800mm
ISO 400, 1/60, F29

The thought process:
Backlighting for drama- expose at 1 stop over the exposure value for the same front lit subject.
F29 - to give the water spray depth.
1/60 - so water droplets look like streaks rather than drops.

Kinda looks like the pelican is surrounded by sparklers.

Slow SS worked really nicely here and the Sun coming through the droplets really makes it look like fireworks...Nice Idea

It does look like sparklers, James. (sparking a new idea!) That is a refreshingly unique image. I never even thought how you could give depth to a water spray, looks great. This has great energy to it, and thanks for sharing your creative & educational thought process. IMO the dark shapes to the left distract just a bit to the sparkler effect, but very nicely done!

A well conceived and executed image, very different look, makes you think about how it was done.

There is enough light on the pelican to easily tell what it is, but the spray display makes the image.

Perhaps a very small crop from the bottom to further emphasize the spray.

I am always keen to see out of the box thinking but I'm afraid this particular experiment doesn't work for me as bird is underexposed and too centred for my taste. I don't feel the sparkles really hold the image or make it very interesting.

Love the idea. I would rotate it CCW, trim from the left as viewed, and I do wish for a clear view of the eye. Creative thinking and use of your gear to come up with something new. Thanks for the inspiration.
