As some of you know (from that "other" forum) the Varied Thrush is my favourite bird. Normally they are a somewhat difficult bird to photograph around these parts, but this year many more of them have come down from the mountain forests and are frequenting feeding stations. So with the generosity of my friend Mike Wooding, by allowing me to invade his backyard, I managed this setup at his feeder.
This species is a dark rainforest bird, and a difficult one to get out of the undergrowth and on to an open perch. So I wanted to do a setup that somewhat illustrated the the type of habitat they live in. I collected this moss that grows on tree branches with ferns growing out of it, and placed it on a perch beside the tray feeder. Unfortunately, I was not quite able to get the full scene in the frame so I had to take a couple more shots to get the ends of the ferns and add canvas to the left.
