A very cooperative little fly helped out a lot.

7D, 100mm macro, f/5.6, 1/60, ISO400, HH.

Photo was cropped and a leaf was removed and some smoothing of bg, as well as white spots removed from eyes.

Such beautiful colors going on here. One can study the colors on the wings and the eyes and plant for a long time.

Nice image, although I might wish for greater DOF to put the left wing (as viewed) and abdomen in better focus. :S3:

Hey Dave,
While I may prefer a bit more DOF.....I think it works as presented. For me....the OOF lower petals......while framing elements......don't quite work as they draw my eye there too much. Scroll and eliminate them.....to see what I mean......so I would go with a crop. Just another option for you as I like the rest.

This is a very nice image, Dave - especially HH at 1/60 with no flash (I doubt that I could have pulled this off at that shutter speed). It is very sharp where it most needs to be and I don't mind the falloff in DOF in this instance. I also like the colors, diagonal comp, and the clean background. I think Roman's suggestion about cropping from the bottom has merit and you might want to consider that. :S3: Well done.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

It sounds like flash is one way to extend the dof. I will need to have a look at that this summer.

This is a very cool macro image Dave! The rich colors and detail is just awesom. Agree with Roman's crop suggestion. Very well done!

Dave, the shallow focus works fine here and I'm amazed you were able to get something this sharp HH and 1/60! I'm undecided about the black spot on the eye....should it stay or go?

Using flash is definitely a way to help you to increase the SS and DOF but the drawback is that on critters like this fly, you will get flash reflections all over those wings and abdomen.

Loved its pose here ! Might try cloning out the LRC petal. For my tastes, I might lower the saturation a bit.
