I took this image last year, it is composed of tin structures on carbon with an SEM aka Scanning Electron Microscope. The size of the largest sphere (the one in the lower left corner) is 0.01 mm or 0.000393 inches wide, i.e. Mag 47,000 X

The composition struck me so I took a screen capture. This is actually composed of two images focus stacked, one for the foreground, one for the background.

It ain't just birds :)

An interesting photo Chris and both are nicely exposed.

I am curious as to what a "tin structure on carbon" would be or look like?

Is this in a lab and they are particles of each? or is it a composite of the two?... ??

Tks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

The tin are the bright balls, such as what you see in the lower left corner, the carbon is kind of like the "blue berry" patch you see in occupying the other portion of the image.

This is actually a focus and stigmatization aid for image optimization prior to actually imaging your sample. I just found some beauty in it.

Hey Chris,
Quuite unusual indeed! I like the way the two tin spheres somewhat balance each other and the way the carbon flows in the image. Sharp where it needs it......but I do a;so wonder what it would look like w/o the urc sphere!

Hi Chris. The detail in SEM images is quite amazing! The image stack and the comp are both well done. I hope you have more of these to share. :S3:

Hi Chris, a wonderful composition indeed! Very "2001 Space odyssey". Few of us can claim having shot at such magnification :c3:.

Wow ! Awesome !
Don't get to see such close-ups often...
Nicely composed image.

Thanks for sharing Chris.
