I've been studying Artie's shooting techniques for a long time, mostly in his bulletins, although I have to admit that I skip over the photoshop stuff and still just use Canon DPP. His cyber-mentoring as far as shooting in the field has brought me a long way and I'm grateful. I'm especially proud of this cover because I've been reading Missouri Conservationist since I was a little boy. Thanks again to Artie and the rest of you guys for the thoughtful suggestions and mild mentoring over the years!

Congrats, Danny! That's a really sweet image.

Where is Union? I grew up 30 miles SE of St. Louis (Illinois side).

Congratulations;

Where did you shoot the swan, Riverlands? I go there at least once a week.
Don't have anything close to what you have for the cover!

Congratulations. Gorgeous light.

Did this go through a stock agency, did they come looking for you after seeing your website or did you send them a portfolio? I am always interested in knowing how these things work out :)

Yes, I took the photo at Riverlands last November. I made the image from my Kayak under a special use permit to obtain photos for the new Audubon facility and Corps outreach publications. Take care.

I had written an article for the magazine and at the last minute they decided to run one of the images that I had submitted for the article. The Missouri Department of Conservation has two full-time wildlife photographers so they rarely seek images but for other magazine covers I have been successful in different ways. Sometimes they contact me because they saw an image in a calendar such as Ducks Unlimited and other times it is just a result of sending image portfolios to magazine editors. You just never know. Every day when I get home I check my email with eagerness to see who might be contacting me for images. I know other BPNrs have the same experience. It also helps to have a great website that isn't too busy....just good photos.

By the way, I am a full-time biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Take care,

DB
