Hey Bhavya,
Interesting angle here but I am not sure that cutting the wings was the best option. If the intent was to show the face closer.....then perhaps an even tighter crop is in order. I do think the light was working against you. Diffusing the light a bit would help. I also think the background is hurting you as it is very busy and bright. In the field I spend more time looking for the cleaner BG than I actually do taking the image! If you were able to reposition yourself on a different angel to eliminate most of the BG, that would have possibly helped. If you had exposed for the perch and hit the DF with a bit of flash......that may also have worked. Many things to keep in mind when in the field and not always easy to implement when your subject is skittish! Keep the BG in mind when doing macro and that will help you greatly!

Hi Bhavya,

Some great advice already given by Roman. Getting an even lower angle might have helped you with getting the background less busy. There are some very nice details on the dragonfly's head, so you should have had some light on it. Now, it's in the shadows because of the angle of the sun. Flash or reflector may have solved the problem.

Hi Bhavya,

Roman and Jerry have given some great advice. Dragonflies can be tough because they are active during the warm time of day which usually means that you have to deal with harsh light that is coming from above. Because of that, I use a lot of fill flash when shooting them.

Hi Bhavya. Dragonflies can be challenging because they often won't allow a close approach - you did well in that regard and captured some nice detail in the dragonfly's head. There are lots of good suggestions above for you to consider that should make your future images even stronger. Keep them coming. :S3:
