I posted a shot yesterday. The sandpiper was sitting on a rock with a rock background. I liked the pose the best of the shots I took that mroning but a few people commented that they did not.
So, here is another shot. I don't like the pose as much but the background is clean. :)

Pretty much the same shooting information except I too the tc off my lens. It was still at 1/000 5.6 with no EC but the auto iso was 200.

Alan, this is wonderful. Loved the sharpness, perch, BG, subject placement and the and perfect HA. If mine, I'd have kept only one catchlight.

Allan - I agree with your comments about pose - yesterday's was more interesting. But there is a lot to like about this shot - nice BG, great detail and texture, lighting and a silky smooth rock. You have made getting a shot like this look easy!

I like the fact that the feet are visible, the water on the rocks, and the bg. Nothing wrong with the pose either. A fine shot.

Awesome perch...I love its wet look. Good BG too. The bird has a nice static pose. I'm often OK with a double catchlight when caused by water below, but I agree the lower one here is a bit much. I would also tone down the whites as they are looking hot.

Alan;

I really like the balance in this comp, the blue water color on the rock, subtle waves in the background.
The whites just under the edge of the wing look pretty warm, although probably not blown

Cheers

I agree on toning down the whites a tad, but this is a really lovely image of a Purple Sandpiper!! I actually prefer the pose here. The perch, BG, and sharpness are all fantastic.

Well done!!

I agree on whites a tad hot but otherwise just about perfect. Excellent IQ.

Does this happen to others?

On my full size tiff - highlights are ok.
Reduce to 800 pixel size. - Some highlights are blown. I have to lower them - say from 255 to 250.
Upload the image - sometimes highlights are now blown.

Allan, the term "hot" does not necessarily mean blown or clipped. Here there is very little clipping going on, almost none worth mentioning, but the whites just underneath the edge of the wing are very bright and look overexposed...they would benefit from some toning down...even 250 is quite "hot" in this case IMO.

P.S. To answer your question, some people have had some clipping issues on otherwise OK images after JPG conversion/resizing compression.

Thanks for the explanation Daniel.
