I like the low angle and strong gaze of the animal. In the overcast conditions, the light is not to flattering and made the dark parts of the animal very deep. I suggest in PS you use Shadows/Highlights adjustment with Shadows at 67 amount, 40 tonal width and 30 radius. Opens up dark spots and brightens the image as a whole.

If not using PS, a levels adjustment can be used to as well as curves.
