Wanted to share some ideas with you here in the landscape forum.....I just returned from Arches where I went mostly to do a night shoot. Alas.....the weather wasn't about to make it easy for me! It is very rare to get exceptional clouds out in the desert SW.....so while I was hoping for blue skies with these type of clouds.....it wasn't to be either! In this case, I remeinded myself to "think like the situation".....it was grey.....with very dramatic clouds....so since it was mostly B&W, I started to concentrate on just the shapes and clouds.....in B&W. I think it was pretty effective and I have many of these over the next few days in similar conditions. With the winter Greys settling in on the US......time to think like a B&W!!!
Canon 1D Mark lll with the 17-40mm lens at 17mm at ISO 800 at f13 for 1/200 sec. HH to make composing easier and intentionally under exposed to maintin detail in clouds. ISO 800 used to keep SS fast to not blur the clouds too much. Courthouse tower and the gossips (aka FG) darkened to silhouette in PP'ing.

Love the clouds in this one. I think the B&W silhouettes really work...We certainly made the best of it. when you are "Roamin with Roman there" is no time or view wasted.

Roman, love those clouds. B&W gives this image a real night-time feel! Well done again!

It is truly artistic!

Did you play with a bit more contrast in the sky, and if so, how did it look?

Yes I did! The web version doesn't have nearly as much as my vesion at home......not sure why though??? I was going to pop it more for web.....but moved on to other things! I do like it bolder in the sky!
I may post another one in a few days and boost it more before downsizing for post here. I genenrally don't have that issue.

Roman,

You covered my question and suggestion. Perfect way to go if things are not meeting your expectations.

Hi Roman, nice job on this...just enough silhouette with an angry sky dominating the image. The image emits a mood and gives me a sense of foreboding. Creative!!

I love the extra contrast in the clouds, which brings out their dramatic shape.

You made a great image here, Roman, and I think the tip about keeping the ISO high enough to get sharpness in the clouds is a great one. The clouds are so painterly, and the tops of the arches are a lovely framing element. The whole feeling reminds me of Van Gogh.
