Wildlife IOTW Ken Dyball for week ending 12/3/2010=Lone Springbok

This image was taken in 2009, i was looking for Oryx on the sand dunes in the Namib Desert when this little fellow poped up, the momment i spotted him i crouched down carefully set my tripod up, waited & hoped he walked towards this spot, usally Springbok see you first on the dunes & then bolt down or over the next dune!

Hey Ken W...I was "guest judge" this week, and I chose this based on recomendations from our mods. I think it is well deserved - hope you do too, but I am interested in your thoughts as your replies piqued my interest (a PM or e-mail is OK if you feel this should be kept from public).:)

Hi all, thanks for the coments, one of the most difficult forms of wildlife photography for me is to show animals in their environment, most of us have some idea were they live but very seldom we include the beauty that surounds them, so some times its nice to have the landscape dominating & show the wildlife factored as the key

This to me a wildlife image if i wanted a landscape i would have waited for the springbok to move away!!
everyone views photography in a different perspective "thank God" & some don't see the finer qualitys & thats fine with me

Due to a heavy work load that week I missed making my recommendations for Wildlife forum IOTW (I am a Wildlife forum moderator). However, Ken D.'s image was on my short list to be picked so I am very happy to see that my fellow moderators felt similarly and nominated it. I am also glad to see it here.

As mentioned, everyone sees things differently including in this case whether this is a landscape image or a wildlife image. I contend it can be either. Ken created an excellent landscape study of light and shadow, form and shape. The inclusion of the Springbok gives it a whole different meaning. That makes it a wildlife image. To me it speaks of the isolation of the animal in its habit. Because of the strong side/back lighting on the animal and its position, its form is clearly seen. Least we not forget this is a small JPG. On a larger scale, I am sure some might view this question and their attitudes differently.

This image shows a photographer thinking, seeing, asking themselves how can I make an extraordinary image. Ken did that and quite well IMO. This image deserves to be in this category and deserves to win.

Interesting observations. I don't want to highjack this thread in another direction so here goes my take as another landscape mod.

To me this fits perfectly in the wildlife category! While I can understand the opinions that this also fits in the landscape category, for me....if the animal wasn't there, it is then definitely a landscape.....but the springbok shows great scale and isolation as Robert mentioned......the image is definitely about the springbok....because without it's presense....it would be just another dune image (although a beautiful one)! I think this fits the wildlife forum very nicely and is well deserving of the IOTW. Besides....3 wildlife mods felt so, as did the guest judge.....that is rare to get that many people to agree!

Enjoy the win Ken Dyball.... and while there may be a difference of opinion....it doesn't detract from this wonderful image and the win is well deserved!

In all seriousness, congrats on this spectacular wildlife image. The setting and the lighting are obviously spectacular and if you moved the animal 6 inches in any direction the composition would not be as strong.

Ken, I've just had time to look at the IOTW winners … this is fantastic and I'm happy to see an environmental wildlife image honoured. They have just as much merit and credibility as the close up portraits we also love to see so well done. :cheers:
