Something a little different.

Nikon D3 with Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 at 14mm

1/6400s @ f/4
ISO 200

Although I was quite close to the birds, this is still a significant crop (around 25% of the original image). Cloned out some messy structures to the right of frame.

Exif data with GPS info is intact if you wished to look at the location.

Cool perspective. This must be a recent photo judging by the sky

For such a large crop it is quite sharp. Interesting conduct too; who won the race? :)

Mark:

The perspective here is great, really feels like you are in the scene. Nice full up wing position, sense of action with the flying sand. My first thought was that the image was a bit dark, but it fits great with the clouds.

Be sure to post at the largest possible size, 200 kb, as it shows off your work to the best advantage.

Cheers

Randy

As posted the details have held on great despite the big crop! I love the dramatic skies here...goes well with the overall darkness of the image. Ideally the wing position on the front bird would be better as not to obstruct half the bill. I do wish for at least a faint reflection in the eyes. Highly enjoyable image, and great to try some new stuff...WTG!

Hi Mark,

I love the uncommon perspective that the wide angle provided. The dark clouds are great, and I love the detail you captured in the foreground pelican. Catching it with its feet just inches from the sand adds a strong feeling of action for me. And I really like the combination of muted pinks and blues provided by the pelican beaks and the sky.

Very cool perspective! I have seen a photographer by the name of Nigel Blake use a wide angle lens to get bird shots. I think this one surpasses any of his because of the sky. It adds a lot of drama to the scene.

Thanks for sharing!

Love it when I see photographers "think outside the box"

Thanks for the comments folks :D

I'm always looking at new ideas and techniques and this one was very rewarding. Just need the weather here to clear so I can try and refine the process :-)

Loved the framing. The dark sky adds a lot to this for me.
