Congratulations Sid Garige for your image "Polar Bear with Cubs" being selected as the Wildlife Image of the week ending 10/8/2010!!!
Kaktovik, Ak
F10 1/640 ISO 800
Canon 7D and 500mm
Just got back from an amazing trip to photograph polar bears at Kaktovik, AK. Due to an arctic storm water levels in and around Kaktovik and Barter Island were unusually high and cut down our vehicular access to bow-head whales bone pile. Only option left was to cruise along the slushed up inlet and scout for bears on the beach. Our guides did an exceptional job navigating in 2inch thick ice and placing us in strategic points. Working in 30 mph winds at 20 degrees was the biggest challenge for me.
Here is an image of a sow and her cubs photographed on first day. Technically, I should have positioned myself a little lower for a uniform background. I did not feel comfortable lying flat on the ground 50 yards from a sow with cubs.
