Bosque 2: Snow Goose

There's been a lot of good action in the morning at the north end of the Farm Loop, where they've been knocking down corn. After the morning fly out at the Crane Pools, I've had good success going directly to the Farm Loop, where the sun and wind have been cooperative lately.

Absolutely nailed Doug. Great wing position, especially with the curled primaries. Well exposed, sharp, and well done on getting the open beak too. I do like the placement in the frame, and the different colours in the BG. Well captured.

I love this image, Doug. Perfectly exposed. The colors take this shot over the top, in my opinion. I love the way the lighter blue and the brown frame this goose against the darker blue background. Great wing position, and the open beak is a plus. Perhaps it could be sharpened a bit more, but I think an ultra-sharp image of the goose would look out of place against that nice, soft background.

Hi Doug,

Sweet shot of one of our most photogenic waterfowl. The white against the blue bokeh glued my eyes to the screen and you caught this fat-necked beauty in mid squeak! I suppose I would agree with a few of the above that the face seems to lose a little bit of the overall sharpness present in other parts of the image but Mike could be right that it might detract if it were too sharp in this particular image.

Awesome calling pose, and I love that near wing (check ou that lone feather being pulled up by the wind!)! I'm a bit bugged by the mountain top just skimming the top edge...perhaps more room all around or a bit more crop above would make this even better (IMO).

That was the thing that I kept coming back to as well. I tried recropping again this morning before posting the shot, but decided to leave it alone. Here's a repost with a more relaxed crop that I think improves the overall image nicely. Thanks Daniel! I also applied a bit of additional sharpening to the head.

It's rare to find a flight shot that tells the story not only of the bird's flight but of the surrounding landscape. Your shot, especially the second crop, does that. I also note that you're hand-holding a 600 mm lens with teleconverter. You must be a brawny man. I love the sheer athleticism of bird photography.
