A young coyote which allowed me to get quite close. I like the soft light provided by high clouds and smoke from nearby range fires. Nikon D200, Nikkor 200-400, f/5.6, 1/125, iso 400, ev + 0.67, m usatrix, tripod. Minor crop, levels, curves, h/s, noise red. & usm.

Very nice direct eye contact Gary, with good soft lighting.
I think this would take another round of USM on the face, might benefit.
You've done well to tone down the FG foliage to match the BG.

I agree, excellent image that could be even better with a bit more sharpening.

Love the look, isolation of subject, BG, and colors. Agree on additional selective sharpening. Very nice.

Beautiful capture. I love the softness, even the softness of the coyote, no sharpening required. I would change nothing.

Like the light and the stare. I agree another round of USM would improve.

Nice intense stare. I like the soft colors and OOF areas. Sharpness is okay to me as is although I might try just a touch more on the eyes for comparison. Might also hit the nose with a little lightening for just a touch of definition on the right nostril. It's nice image as posted.

Repost following another round of usm and lightening the nose. Thanks to all for C & C.

Although the posts are noticeably different, I find it difficult to choose between them, I would be happy to have either.

Hi Gary, really liked your coyote shot, both repost and the OP. It is nice that somebody actually takes pics of coyotes, as they seem to suffer from lots of bad press. Wish we would see more of these of these good looking animals. I liked the OOF BG, the intent stare, and the eye contact. Well done
Cheers

Great portrait. Like the OOF vegetation in the foreground.

nice portrait in soft light here Gary! I like the direct stare. The repost has improved sharpness but it seems the shutter speed was just not enough, and the apparent softness might be a slight motion blur?
