I managed to spend some time at a local reserve today and spent a lot of time working on clean backgrounds and head positions. Any comments will be very well received.

I like the pose and eye contact. The perch is a bit overpowering for my taste. The dark spot in the BG is a bit distracting, the bird is too centered and fill flash would have helped with the details on the chest and catchlight. It might also work as vertical crop.

Here's how a simple recrop and toning down of that dark spot can drastically improve an image. It's a nice one to start with but Axel is right that the perch is overempowering and the bird centered. Recropping takes care of both these points, then toning down the dark spot makes sure our attention stays on the bird and not drifting towards it. Beautiful bird for sure, and you caught in a very good pose !
