I want to gift my wife a lens for landscape photography. I request my dear fellow members to help me select one for her. Mainly will be used on a 40D, 7D or MK4 and my budget would be about 1000 USD, I can push a bit more too..

please help.

On 40d and 7D, I have heard very good things about Ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS...but it wont work on 1D. Except build, it is supposed to be L-like.

I use and like my 17-40 f/4L a lot. So if that is the focal length range you are looking for, then it is one that will work on all three cameras and save you some money :-). For landscapes, I dont miss IS or f/2.8 all that much.

24-105L would be another one in your budget, but on a 1.6x crop factor, 24 is not very wide IMO. But that is a superb general purpose travel lens and has IS too. 24-70 f/2.8 is a little over your budget.

My budget was around $1000 too...so I went with 17-40 and a 100 f/2 combo....earlier this year. The latter is great for portraits as well and I use it to shoot my son all the time. I have the cheapo 50 f/1.8 too.

I love my Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 on my 7D (won't work on FF camera). It's well built, sharp, and has excellent color rendition. The ultrawide angle takes some getting used to, however.

I recently talked to a very accomplished outdoor photographer who loves the 10 - 22 lens. His photos are excellent. The price is under US 1000. I am thinking of getting this lens myself.
