I am trying to get optimal DOF on small birds.

EXTF:
1/250 at f8
ISO 400
Focal length: 420mm (672 in 35mm)
-2/3 EV
Canon 50D

Thanks for your help.

George:

An attractive fellow, I like the pose with the separation of the neck feathers from the torso, pleasant background. Well exposed.
The plane of focus seems to be a bit anterior to the bird, as the post is sharper than the bird to my eye.

In general a smaller, more natural perch would be more complimentary to the subject.
The light was well off to the right, leaving much of the bird in shadow. It can be made to work with strong directional lighting, but it is more challenging than straight frontal lighting. The birds head angle did help you with the lighting.

Cheers and thanks for your membership support.

Randy covered my thoughts well. A bit more DOF would get the tail in focus.
