We were told by our guide that this is an Osprey our village experts think otherwise.

Probably far too much of a crop, the bird was across the Ruaha River.

Taken in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania 6th September 2010

This looks nothing like an Osprey to me Ken. Some other species for sure mate. Would have been nicer with a better HA. It's a great record shot though! :)

I wont bet money on my guess, but i think its an Augur buzzard (as found in tanzania), link : http://travel.mongabay.com/tanzania/images/tz_1966.html

The augur buzzard gets my vote too. Here is a link to a slide show including an image quite similar to yours. http://www.arkive.org/augur-buzzard/buteo-augur/

I have never been birding in Africa so I don't have any experience of the bird, but I don't think this is a buzzard. An Augur Buzzard doesn't have a bill like that, this is one heavy bill like an eagles. Also a juvenile or sub-ad augur have yellow bill base this bird have dark. I think it's an juv. African Fish-eagle like Ken and the village experts say. Here's an picture on a juv African fish-eagle: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.arkive.org/media/13/1382BCAE-F525-41B0-94D2-19EAF3E2E9B9/Presentation.Large/photo.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.arkive.org/african-fish-eagle/haliaeetus-vocifer/image-G34441.html&usg=__GfSJOPgTtbn6OsN6QfcolFYAnIQ=&h=432&w=650&sz=66&hl=sv&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=eMCcrM5xPFkXRM:&tbnh=120&tbnw=180&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djuv%2BAfrican%2BFish-eagle%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dsv%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dcom.micr osoft:sv:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7ADBS_sv%26biw%3D1259%26bih%3D 560%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=677&vpy=82&dur=671&hovh=183&hovw=275&tx=181&ty=113&ei=QE-8TIfJPM7KjAessqSzDg&oei=QE-8TIfJPM7KjAessqSzDg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0

Nice image. Beautiful light, and good controled black/whites, just some small overexposition on the foot. TFS
