This Hippo did not take to kindly to our arriving in his bay. Unfortunately when he charged the boat I missed the shots (too close and furious), so this will have to do.

Taken on Lake Kariba, Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe 20th September 2010.

I wonder how that looked like when it charged the boat. However, this is pretty wild and I love it. Very powerful image.

Ken - stunning shot. Great light, good action and very sharp. Definitely have to watch out for them while boating.

Crisp colors and light! All it needs is a trunk and would equal a juvenile elephant :D
It's a coincidence that I just finished watching a documentary on Crocs and Hippos and their individual aggressiveness. And they did show a couple of hippo charges!!

Thanks for sharing!

One of the best hippo shots I've seen. Excellent clarity. Well done.

Thanks very much for all of the kind comments, but I think the Hippo should get it for putting on a fine show this certainly was not one of those threat yawns.

I have never seen anything like it and whereas I am extremely dissapointed to miss the "real" action, I am happy to get this and a few others.

Does it still need a little rotation?

Ken,
A big congrats! I like this image a lot. Typically we dont see a hippo standing "tall" in water. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Hi Ken,

I have absolutely nothing to add. I think everybody else used all the phrases I would have chosen to say this is awesome!

Superb opportunity here and well used. I only see one image and it needs some rotation.

This is superb...The pose is great and I like the warm light...I like the portrait crop, would be interesting to see a landscape crop as well...But this works nicely....I think a 1-2 Degree CCW rotation to level waterline but otherwise a top class image.

Dumay,

Thanks for that, I think I corrected the rotation before it was posted on the website for Rhino Safari Camp

My favourite camp in all Africa, not expensive, not crowded, great food and good friends.
