100% crop. S/H, sharpening in CS5

(Oh, and I cloned out a bald eagle who was standing on the log in the right FG and staring at the mountain).

gorgeous image of the mountains. For me, the logs/driftwood doesn't help the image and I would try cropping at the bottom of the trees. To me, it certainly does look like a mountain floating above another mountain. lol

Thanks, Cheryl. I tried your suggestion, but not sure that I like it as much. I'll be interested in hearing other comments.

It really did look like a 'floating mountain'. We got lucky and had views of McKinley for almost a week (which I'm led to believe is a true rarity) . This was June 2009.

Hi Ian, I tend to lean towards the original since it adds interest to the base of the image without taking away any of the mountain's drama.
I tried to bring the image into PS to see if I could give it a bit of contrast without taking away any of ethereal qualities but found that you sized it about the same as a postage stamp.
I obviously couldn't do anything to it. You made the width 122 when you can go as high as 1000 long and 700 high.
I like the floating mountain but feel it needs a bit more dimension and just a small bit off the top...

Thanks for commenting, Dave. Unless I'm doing something wrong (which is very possible), the image is 1024 x 683px (I just rechecked it). I thought 1024 was the max allowed here. I'd love to see your ideas.

Ian,I'm showing 122x82 on image size in PS

Not here ... I show 122 when I click on the BPN thumbnail, but 1024 when I open the image. I get the same when I click on 'image properties' and when I put it in PS.

Hi Ian, I succeeded in brightening the image(using a levels adj) but not sure if I hurt the mood. I just felt it needed more. What you like best is what counts here...

Thanks, Dave, I came up with something similar. What bothers me about yours and my own is that, in doing this, although Mckinley looks better, the peaks in the FG become much more contrasty. I wish I could figure out how to avoid that.

Ian...I also vote for original crop, anytime you can see McKinley at all is a bonus...nice composition...Dave's lightening does help...TFS

Ian,

Greetings. I really like the floating mountain... Beautiful! Looks to me like a little off on the wb. Here is a couple of ideas...

79473

Put some color samplers on the whites of McKinley and used LAB mode curves to bring them close to A = 0 and B = 0. Took a middle gray to a white vector mask to add back some of the original color to the lower mountains. Added contrast to McKinley (steep curve in the upper portion of the L curve). Masked this curve for just McKinley.

Cheers,

-Michael-

Ian,

I would crop just above the large and long tree in the FG as that grabs the eye. I like it more that way but still retain the water base for the mountain and tree line.

Thanks for posting and looking forward to seeing more of your images. And if you have not done so, please lend a hand and tell our other forum participants what you think about their work. We are all here to learn and the more the merrier. Thanks for helping out.

Hey Ian,
VG advice given above and I am leaning with Robert on the crop recommendation. 7 days of Denali......that is beyond rare!!! Nice job with this different view and following tweak suggestions will only take it up another notch!
