View Full Version : Theme Canada Goose silhouette.

Taken early one morning about a month ago. I spotted this guy from a ways away taking a bath, then preening from atop this rock. I knew it was only a matter of time before the wings flapped...and with the sunlight coming from behind it and no way to get around the only option was going for a silhouette. Not a bad option if you ask me!

This was a perfect example of how to "see" opportunities. Next pane features what the scene looked like at first glance...seemingly not much there but taking your time to look for options can unveil many good opportunities!

Canon 40D + 100-400L @360mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/1000s., f/6.3, ISO 400, +0.3 EC, natural light, handheld.

Nice silhouette! Wings are in good position. Good example of how to "see" opportunities too.

Hey Dan, Good backlighting effect through the edge of the near wing, and well timed to capture the flap. Just enough exposure to see a touch of detail on the goose, and I like your comp. An opportunity well used Dan.

The shot is good, but even more valuable is Dan's insight into "seeing" opportunities.

Daniel, this is very very cool. I love silhouettes where the subject isn't completely dark. Really like the bit of light filtering through the near wing.
The horizon makes me want to have about a degree of CW rotation.
Very well framed, and beautifully executed.
Thanks so much for sharing the story and especially pane 2. I would honestly not have seen this opportunity. Love this forum!

Well spotted and taken Daniel. In addition to above, I like the fact the far wing is just separate enough from the bird. :)
