Wow, these are tough birds to shoot well, but you did a great job with this. I think for a couple reasons; one the contrast and sharpness of the bird really stands out against the dark bg, but also you got the bird in the right spot within the frame.

Nicely rendered colors through out the image. I like the down wing position. Would like to see more room below. Might run another round of sharpening on the head.

I love your title! I was out shooting herons this morning and your title describes these guys well! I agree that you rendered the colors well and I like the wing position. I'd like to see his head tilted a little more our way and I agree about needing a bit more room at the bottom.

Gorgeous colors, Stuart, and an awesome wing position. You have a pleasing BG. I do agree this could use a tad more room at the bottom if you have it.

Lovely image I like the exposure and colours, maybe a little more canvas at the bottom but I am not 100% sure I suspect this is as taken and therefore if canvas was added it would not look quite right becasue of the angle of view??

Stuart,

This composition works much better in my opinion.

Much better composition with the added canvas & brightening the image makes the GBH pop more.

I like the repost better, although original crop was very thought provoking. Very nice capture of a diffficult subject in flight.

Stuart,

The repost is a vast improvement, but you appear to have added more room at top as well.

Repost looks very good, I may be tempted to crop the top to remove the grasses.

The comp of the repost is alot better, but I prefer the colours, water texture, and overall "punch" of the original. Both would have needed the heron higher in the frame IMO, but you sure did get him nice and sharp.
