Interesting, good timing! Although you did well getting the head in focus, I think cranking up the ISO for a greater DOF (like f11) and getting most of the dragonfly in focus would have been better, but that could just be me. I also think the shutter speed was either too slow ( if you wanted to freeze the motion), or too fast( if you wanted a wing blur to indicate motion). Again, just my opinion. regards~Bill

Just for the reason that you got this on film...err...sensor is an accomplishment to me. Congrats !

Hi Ian - great timing thats for sure - head/eye is sharp. Agree with William for my tastes would have bumped that ISO to at least 1600 and stopping down some more to get a greater DOF. Aint hindsight wonderful.
I would consider getting rid of the specular highlights in the BG.
DIF - well done :)

Great shot. Specular highlights need to go. I don't mind the shallow depth of field at all.

Thanks, folks.

Is this better?

Jules, thanks for moving the post to the appropriate thread. When you suggested lightening up the area at the base of the right wing, you meant his left wing, correct?

Hey Ian,
Flying DF are extremely difficult! You have 2 options generally......higher ISO for max SS.....or go a bit slower and hope for a nice wing blur. BG fixes were the way to go but watch those perches.....right side is still a bit too bright. Getting that perch wet may help tone it down.....kids water gun is perfect tool!:D. I think an arc of the wing motion would take this to another level.....so just keep that in mind for next time out!

Thanks, Roman. I'll bet if I sprayed down the perch, he would have zzzz'd off somewhere else :) Anyway, I like the water gun idea (whaddya mean, "Kids"? :) ) and will add one to my armaments.
