Ian, the Dasher is nicely captured but I think there are 2 things you could do to really improve this shot. Lighten up the lower part of the face and crop a bunch away from all sides. I think this would look better as a horizontal but if you want some height, maybe a square would work OK.

Ian, you really did an outstanding job on capturing this one! Beautiful pose and I really like the vertical presentation...but...agree that there's too much around the frame. I cropped to an 8x10 and then checked the ROT's and this is almost spot on for his eyes to be right at the intersecting point. I also lightened that face a little and the blue sky just a bit. Awesome DOF...you really must have been dancing after you snapped this one!

Thanks, Ken! Something more along these lines?

Thanks so much, Jules. I think you and I posted simultaneously. Yes, I always have trouble with these guys and this one finally seemed to come together. I think the problem is that I usually try it with my 100mm macro lens and I am finding my results are actually better with a telephoto. I think it's time to buy some extension tubes.

BTW, I'm a neophyte when it comes to dragonflies/damselflies. Is there a good book to learn some identification?

Hey Ian,
I like Ken's repost crop wise and opening up the face is also a good idea. You may consider going out to 150mm next time out.....keeping in mind Kens crop look. I do think you can also go to ISO 200 or higher......to eek out more DOF if you need it......keep in mind that falloff is quicker the closer you get! Nice job overall isolating this.....so keep working and you will get some great advice here.
