View Full Version : So what did/will you photograph this week-end?

For the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer, flowers are abundant in some places, drying from heat in others. Chicks are fledging, migration not yet started, so what are you doing or did this week-end???
How is the summer treating you in your side of the woods?
Are you collecting RAW files to process in winter or keeping your archives up to date?

I'll be the first one to reply.
Al and I went to Tiger Tail Beach defying the 101 degree heat index to check if the Skimmer Colony was still there. Fledglings are as big as adults and skimming, but just getting seaweed. You got to start somewhere :D
Florida summer is no different than other years, no hurricanes yet, fortunately, but intense humidity and afternoon storm cells.
As usual, Al has his files up to date on Lightroom while I process on a "need to do" basis.
What's your week-end story? :)

Shorebird migration has already started around here, it should get even better in the coming days.

Fabs:

Woke up at 5:30, figured I better check out the local bird sanctuary. Had not been there for 6 weeks or so, so always fun to see what was going on.
Spent most of my time taking pictures of floating feathers, inspired by some of the very cool images of same posted by you and Chas McRae.
Still tinkering with those images.

Working on my boats for the next loon outing!

Hope everyone has a productive but fun weekend!

Cheers

Randy

Aside from all the day to day stuff (errands/cleaning....yuk.....cooking). I am planning to practice zoom blurs and trying to get the center sharp. Haven't been able to do it thus far. Have been doing some reading (Artie's 7D Guide), some stuff by David DuChemin (Cdn photog). Hope to make it thru my Ansel Andams book of prints that I have (for inspiration). Looked at Gallography, and was very inspired by the work on his site. Downloaded some Flaming Pear plug-ins, and am trying them out. Tomorrow, hope to get out and shoot those flippin' Caspian Terns.(again) (been practicing). Usually read, practice editing, or get out to shoot. Always at least one thing photo related ea w/e.

Jackie, pausing briefly before zooming may get you a sharp center. I'd also go One Shot.
I think I saw Artie posted a tutorial on the ER Forum.
Nice new avatar :)

Mike Gallo is a very talented artist and friend.

Hi I am a newbie to site. The migration has been going a couple of weeks here (south coast UK), The Avocets, Spotted redshank and Godwits are beginning to arrive back at my local patch (Browsea Island) for the winter so I will probably catch the boat out there tomorrow.

Took the morning off and then drove out to Okeechobee to Thundercross Motocross to get some images for the new Action, Acceleration and Exhilaration Forum. Have been nursing some ailments so didnt stay long. Just long enough to take about 550 pics! Hopefully got a few keepers that will be more interesting than the dog and pony show I've had going on this week.

Around 6pm yesterday we (hubby & me) grabed our cameras and made our rounds around the neighborhood. Lucky us..the tide was low and we had a ball with wadding birds just down the street from us. 4 GBH, pelicans, opsreys, willets, terns, juvi snowy egrets, little blues, yellow crown NH & a raccoon who had a beer can stuck on his paw (the ranger was looking for him). I got a few good once with GBH feeding himself with small skates!
Today I tested my new macro gadget & found some dragonflies. It's a pretty neat little toy:)

Afternoon cleaned closet to make room for my lens collection which we can never have enough of:)

Tomorrow I have to install & transfer the cloned image Win7 to a new SSd h/d because the old WD crapped out (it's the 7's WD drive in 8 months).

Busy w/e so far.

I'll post a sample when my 24 hr time is up an image taken with the new gadget.

Fab is there still action on Tiger Beach?

Yes, Renate, the fledglings are very active, it's very good for flight opportunities, of both, adults and chicks. If you can take the heat :)

Weekend off camera while I refit the Hooptie Deux!
Yuck:2eyes2:

This is the Salvage boat I'm snagging the side railing and seats from.
It looked like a real pontoon boat this morning. I have most of it disassembled, the seat bases cleaned and railing ready for paint prep.
Sunday, the Hooptie Deux gets taken down to the plywood and rebuilt!

Weather permitting, I will go on my current daily pilgrimage to the Blue Cranes, still dark at the moment, but there is wind so mist seems unlikely (I hope)

I will do my new standard of 12-hours of work (7days a week for 3+ months now with little time off). In a spare moment I will replace the kitchen faucet. Then a few moments on BPN. Would love to get out with my new 1D Mark IV. Perhaps soon.

Finally got around to doing something I've put off for a while - putting screen protectors on the 50D and 7D LCD screens. Also put them on the top LCD windows. I found the perfect protector sheets at Best Buy, made for iPod touch and come in a package of five sheets. They are easy to cut to fit and one sheet covers both back and top screens.

Getting ready to enter some photos in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area "Spirit of the Mountains" contest next month. Going through my photos from the area (and I have a lot of them!) to decide which ones to enter. Two entries per category allowed, so I'm going for "plants", "animals", "people in the parks", and "A moment in time" categories.

Heading for the local mountains this afternoon in search of woodpeckers and other forest birds. Weekends just aren't long enough! ;)

Hey Fabs, you forgot the Southern Hemisphere;) Well we have a long weekend, today being a holiday in SA. We are coming to the end of our winter, not so cold anymore, and spring day is 1st Sept. Went to one of my favourate shooting spots at the Pilanesberg nature reserve yesterday, ( 2 hrs drive ) Today, caught up with some photographic buddies and went to a new birding spot in Johannesberg ( 40 mins drive )

Shorebirds are here. We have got only one nice place in Dallas though. And at that place they are pretty skittish. Almost impossible to get them within my 400mm reach. Spent a few hrs and came home realising I need more focal length, more pixels and better AF. A feeling, I am sure, most of you here will relate to :-) I have that feeling every weekend, infact. To temporarily get out of it, I take some shots of my son playing in the park or pool or with his bike :-)

This coming weekend, I will be volunteering at local Audubon sanctuary for their annual duck Derby. Besides escorting people to wear the Derby will take place. I will be taking candids of the race. Otherwise, I am working on all my images for my trip to St. Paul Island in the Pribilof's

Last weekend it was butterfly photography at a butterfly festival that had almost no butterflies :( but this weekend will be photos of family and friends as I welcome my best friend back to KC so I can finally celebrate my 50th birthday (seven months late!) Hey, she's been there for all the other "big" birthdays - I couldn't very well let her skip this one! So photos of friends, family and neighbors will be this weekend's priority.

Now if she happens to sleep in one morning I might get out and get some macro shooting done. It's finally supposed to break the 100 degree mark this weekend!!! :D:):D

I went out to a friends farm to shoot raptors hunting for little critters in the hay field. No luck the birds were not around. So we hiked the wooded area of the farm and got some waterfall images. Later Gail and I went the weekend at the NASCAR Race in Watkins Glen driving golf carts to help handicapped people around the track grounds. 4 days 13 hours a day but a lot of fun helping needy people.
