Galapagos: Urbina Bay Specialty

A large yellow race of Land Iguanas inhabit Urbina Bay on Isabella in the Galapagos. It is on my itinerary each year. This image was created with the tripod-mounted Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/100 sec. at f/5.6. Finding a subject in the shade was the key to making a successful image that afternoon. :)

These are great characters Artie, the subtle tones in the BG echo the colouring of the Iguana very well.

I think Ray Harryhausen would have been proud of this fellow for one of his films. ;)

The underparts are uniformly lit. I like the eye contact and the lower angle. I feel some more space at the left would have been even better. Thanks for sharing.

Like how the eye and claws are in the same plane and sharp, excellent pose and appealing On the tech side big time well holding the lens with all that magnification at 1/100 !!! With as good an ISO performance you have with the MK4 would have tempted to at least go to 800 but you pulled it off perfectly !!! Big Congrats on this one !!!

Thanks Alfred. The IS is so improved on the 800 that sharp at 1/80 sec. is child's play. I have gotten sharp stuff down to 1/6 sec. Pretty consistent at 1/30 sec. Amazing....

I should have mentioned that there are lots of very rich nature photographers who own and use this lens. You still have to go out and make the images....

Very much so. Had I move back enough to have gotten in the whole right leg then the size of the iguana in the frame would have been greatly reduced. An option would have been a stitched pano but I like it as is.

Thanks Artie. I asked because I think in the field I probably would have included all of the leg but I do think this is a stong comp. Then again I'm not shooting with the 800 :).

all these new IS/VR are so good , I have some wonderful images with 600mmVR of Nikon and 300mm IS of Canon at less than 1/50
