What a pose! I love the hint of orange behind the bird. When Ted and I were there in 2007, we had blazing bright light, awful! This is sweet, Fabs.

Having good light really lends itself to this bird with the rich dark browns and that 'Kodak' yellow, but then too much will blow the whites, nicely judged. Fabs, be interested to know where the focus point was.

You have been trying a lot of unusual angles lately.
Got any shot more to the left?
Is this bird only in NE?

Thank you all.
Believe or not, light was not soft. I exposed to the right and recouped the whites in post processing. I only had center point since I was using a 5.6 lens with the converter, and he yawned really fast, most probably around the neck, but that's why I used f/10, to protect myself. If you expose for the whites on these birds, you dead.

Thanks, Troy. Yes, I got more on left, but tried to keep a vert ratio in the crop and there's nothing really in the left to grant a square crop.
Bird in NE as far as I know, Newfoundland too.

I like the angle, sharpness, pose, BG and exposure control.

Troy, Razorbills spend most of the time on the open ocean and in North America only nest in Maine and further north.

This is very special and beautiful. love the BG.
I'm not decisive about the orange spot in the BG.
Do you think that a higher shooting point would be better?

Thanks, Gal. BG are rocks, with spots. We were in a very small hide with 3 other photographers. No way to even move left or right, so you get what you can!

Fabs:

A well crafted and processed shot. You handled the lighting very well.
I think razor bills are great looking birds, but similar challenges to loons to expose.

Glad you both made it home safely.

Cheers

Fabs, you nailed the exposure, and I like that we can see inside the bill. Your choice of comp works well.

A nice open bill shot of this Razorbill Fabs. Like the exposure as it's not easy to get the brown and the white right on this bird (photographed them on Machias Island...usually in harsh light though). Like how you got the yellow inside its mouth to show nicely like that too.
