Light was poor last evening under heavy cloud cover, so I went on a scouting mission, seeing what I could find to perhaps photograph in better light on another day. As luck would have it, I found this most cooperative yellow crowned night heron. You can see from my techs what I was working with, but I think it worked out ok for this image.

Cropped to vertical.

Hi Grace, I like the ruffled tail feathers, and good comp to suit the pose. It looks like the light wasnt too great as you stated, so you were on a losing battle to have more DOF. Well you have perfect focus in the right place, and that makes the image work. Well done.

Grace, considering the conditions, superb job. I like that the head is quite sharp.

Grace,
1600 ISO looks clean. Sharp where it needs to be and the softness in places works very well. A successful scouting mission.:D

Well, the limited DOF worked well here, head is tack sharp and that's what counts. I think it ouch use a tiny bit of CW rotation.
You should never call it quits because of clouds, you never know what you may get :)

I like the fluffed up pose, and the falling feathers at right. Sharp where it needs to be. I agree with CW roatation, and I see a magenta cast on the heron.

The sharp head is good enough to make this work. Great job for conditions.
