I t woks for me, KD, in fact I have one very similar, pointed to me by John Moran, Florida's Laureate Photographer.
Although I'm not a fan of flash for white birds, in this instance, a kiss of flash would have brought out the whites. Then again, it would be a totally different picture.
Rim light and spec highlights do it for me.

Interesting effect, head angle and composition look good, too. I might sharpen the bill a bit less, the edges are jagged. I might reduce the blue saturation on the bird and remove the one very bright spot in the lower right.

I like it as presented and would only take the one bright oof highlight in bg !! .. btw the tiny flash suggested by Fabs would have created a catch light to brighten the eye !! Keeper !!!

Works for me as posted. The tiny rimlight on the neck and bill is nicely complimented by the brightly lit head feathers hanging down in the back. The circular highlites add a nice feel.
