Baboon and Baby
Okavango Delta, Botswana. Chitabe Camp area
July 2009

Nikon D3, 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, 1/10 @ f/8, ISO 250

I absolutely love shooting panned blur shots, and this was just one of those moments that 'worked'. I often attempt many different shutter speeds, ranging from 1/4 of a second all the way to 1/60 of a second, depending on the speed of my subject in relation to the camera. The light had already faded away, and after sunset there aren't many photographic opportunities other than to take some creative risks. So me and my workshop participants sat there and photographed a very large baboon group for the better part of half an hour.

Thanks, Marc. I will be in southern Africa for the rest of this year, actually. My schedule changes year to year, and I am leading more and more safaris to other countries in addition to Tanzania. I will be in Kenya and Rwanda next September, though!

Like this effect very much. Lovely overall colours and tones and the baby is wonderfully focussed on the viewer.

Exclusive image . The sharp baby on top of the blurred mother , seems a bit hash for the mother :) . She looks all worked up , while he seems to enjoy the ride.

Hey Big Guy, Good to see you here. This one is exquisite for all of the reasons noted above. The sharpness of the young one at 1/10 sec. is astounding.

Blurred in all the right places, sharp where it needs to be. I like how the legs fade into the grass.

A fine image. Love the composition and pan blur treatment. One needs tons of practice to get these images right. Thanks for sharing.
