My first Night Heron taken at Mud Lake in Ottawa.

A700-Sigma 120-400mm (Handheld) - 400mm, 1/500, f8, ISO1600

Good environmental shot. I would crop some off the bottom, maybe up to the bottom of the stump he's standing on. A larger aperture would blur the background more.

Some good advice by Jeff P.
There does seem to be a moderate amount of noise in the image. Did you have to bring it up in post because the bright water caused you to under expose the bird? Depending on how your histogram looked at the time, you might have added a bit of plus EC.

Always fun to image a new one!

Thanks Jeff & Randy. I had the camera set to ISO 1600 due to the location and the histogram looked fine (exposed to the right) so I had to take a bit of -EC to darken the photo abit. I was looking for one of these all morning and just before I left the area I spotted him right in front of me :). I will try to find him again and hopefully I can use a lower ISO setting.
