He's not the most well thought of photographer. Never met him personally, but have heard many stories. Just an interesting link http://wolves.wordpress.com/2007/05/25/hayden-valley-grizzly-mauling/ . Everyone can make up their own mind.

I don't know about this specific case, people seem to have very strong views about him. However, if someone is really knowledgeable, then he or she can move very close to animals without disturbing them. Ofcourse, you have to understand that you can't just walk in straight. You need time to move in.

Caution: Whatever may the level of knowledge, at times we find that we are outwitted. Also, one needs to factor in the effect of exhaustion and overconfidence. Forget about wildlife, think about driving. Even after driving for several decades, at times we make mistakes.

If he was trying to get the bears annoyed for the purpose of clicking images of the bears growling etc, then that is deplorable and should be punished.

Cheers,
Sabyasachi

You get the same brave photographers here in SA, one I know of regularly throws sticks or stones at animals to make them look up. I will not name names but watch out for that charging Elephant.
