View Full Version : CS5 and RAM message

Since I started using CS5 in the new computer (16 gigs of RAM, although using the 32 bit version), twice I got a not enough RAM message. This never happened to me in CS4, I've gotten scratch disk message, but never anything about RAM.
Do I have something wrong in the settings?

Hi Fabs,

Apparently, CS5 in 32 bit mode uses less memory than CS4 - almost a 1GB less in fact. See the link below. JR

In 32 bit mode, can you address 16GB of RAM? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought you needed to be running in 64Bit to do that.

This is why I run CS5 in 64bit mode and start CS4 if I need plugins like Viveza.

In Preferences > Performance, check the percentage of available RAM you're allocating to PS.

If you have a 64-bit OS, then by all means install the 64-bit version of Photoshop.

I'm on a Windows 7 system, but you can see what a difference it makes ...

David, the problem is that many of the plugins such as Viveza don't run in 64bit mode yet, at least on Macs.

Right, I understand, but you can run both versions of PS (not simultaneously, of course). I keep shortcuts on a toolbar so I can launch either version with one click.

Yes, this is what I do. Actually, I can run both versions at the same time and just close the image before opening it in the other PS version.

That's interesting. Can't run both versions together on a PC. Or at least I can't.

I was running both in XP on my laptop. I waited to un-install CS4 until I made sure CS5 was working and that seemed to work ok.

I've been running both at the same time with CS5 in 64 bit with 8gb of ram on my Mac with no problem. The plugins are coming out slowly. OnOne and Tiffen filters already out as well as Topaz in 64bit.

Thank you guys!
How do I get a shortcut to switch versions?

I guess it's a Windows 7 thing. When one version of PS is running, the other won't launch. But the few plug-ins I have will run in CS5 64-bit, so I don't really need 32-bit.

Create two shortcuts, one for each version.

I put shortcuts for CS4 and CS5 in the dock. The logos are different.
