My main focus of the image was the landing posture of the Black Headed Heron. When I was busy processing this, I decided to leave in the two herons in the tree. My own critique - maybe a tad tight on the right, and no eye contact from the juvvie. Taken at the University sports grounds of Pretoria a while back.

Stuart:

I like the story here of one adult coming home to the nest, with the juvi and other adult waiting. It would be even better if the adult in the nest were looking up at the landing bird.

The light was well off to your left, which gave some shadows under the wings. Perhaps even it out a bit with a little curves work applied selectively to the shadows.

Nice wing spread, open bill, feet down.

Whites on cheek right on edge on my monitor.

I like it overall!

Cheers

Randy

I like the pose of the landing adult, but I think some attention in that direction by the adult in the nest would have made all the difference.

I don't mind the underwing shadow as I kinda like some shadows as I feel it gives certain images depth.

The whites on the cheek however and in other spots are really hot.

I like the incoming pose and open bill and agree on toning down the highlights, they don't look overexposed but are quite bright. In the BG are jpg artifacts, maybe from compression or resaving?

Great action, wish you had moved the camera just a tiny bit to the right, to include the whole waiting bird.

Ditto all of the above plus a wish for a bit more room on the right....

Stuart, wonderful action shot. Loved the open bill and the wing spread. Lot of good advice already given above. Thx for sharing.
