When you want to sharpen only part of an image, here's the steps to follow. As in any other PS routine, there are many ways to accomplish the same results. This is my favorite:

1-Duplicate your layer (Control/Command J)
2/3-Apply your sharpening to the whole layer
4/5-Create a layer mask
6-Black as you Foreground Color
7-Select your Brush from the Tool Palette
Brush (Paint black) the sharpening away where you don not want it.
If you need to re-do, White as your Foreground color will paint the effect back.

Ha! I was so busy digging on the great tutorial I didn't even see what the birds were up to! Thanks, Fab. I've been wondering how to do that!
