Osprey and fish

From this morning an osprey bringing back a fish to the nest, difficult finding fish with heads :) opreys seem to eat those right away, always start at the head !! Exposure wise is best to set a basic exposure then change ISO with light conditions, with today's light it was probably +2/3 off sky.

Good it was but the wind was visciuous, no fun !!! .... and direction was not optimal !! If we ever get a ten mph wind due east will clean up !!! :)

Great underside lighting on the wings showing the feather detail....especially the splayed tail..congrats. Difficult getting that exposure. I am jealous...I can't wait to get back there...maybe the week after this one coming up. And yes I took notice of the ISO setting...as it relates to the changing light conditions...thanks for sharing

I thought they usually took away the head first, I was wrong. So they like to eat the head first.
That is a big fish, plus the wind, must have been hard to get the fish to the nest?

Hi Troy They do eat it first !!! They love it !!

I usually meter of the sky, one over gives you close to a neutral gray so I was actually one third under to compensate for the whites. Sky is a good reference for metering !!

Arash the chicks should be up in the air by the time you get here :)

The entire meter off the bright sky concept is almost like the zone system, making the sky zone 5 or so.

That is correct Jeff The only difference you don't have as many zones !! Ansel actually had a color zone system but was never popular (impractical) !!

The big deal about the zone system and b&w is being able to develop to condition .... can expand or contract the tonal range to make the negative fit the printing paper. Fun to work and sure miss it !!!


.... btw blue bg for most of these looks strange out of the camera, very blue and not realistic. I like to select the sky, lighten some then reduce saturation.

Lovely image, very nice composition. Thanks for posting your exposure technique, It's been good reading about it. I usually leave the ISO set to 200, set it to Av mode and change the apeture and compensation as needed. I'll have to remember this thread and try it out when I go looking for some BIF shots.
