I always get a kick out of seeing Ring-necked Ducks head-on, which shows the true shape of their heads, or at least the plumage outline. In actual fact the top-knot over the eyes is pretty well all feathers and they raise and lower this crest at will. Just before they dive the crest comes down and for that moment they look entirely different.

John, I've always wondered why they call them Ring-Necked, I always want to say Ring-Billed. I can't see the image, sent a message to James. I only see about 50-60% of the images in the threads I open, not sure why.

Hey Paul- They are trying to get everything back to normal after a BPN site shut down yesterday. A few posts and images are not up right now. I can see this Ring-necked image. The rusty ring on the neck is clearly visible. However, I agree they should be called Ring-billed Duck!
