Hey William, Thanks for the link to the blog post; I read it with great interest. I did get your e-mail with the link but could not get it to work. Even tonight the first attempt to load the page failed. I gotta say that I am glad that I persevered.

It was interesting to see your take on things. (Don't get me wrong, I considered everything that you said as a compliment.) First off, the Morro Bay gig was a bit out of the ordinary as the folks from the Institute set up the schedule and got you folks :) Neither is typical for an IPT. That said, I first began sharing folders of brand new images, images that I had never even been through, with weekend seminar groups a few years back. The reaction was always hugely positive. When I go through a folder of images intent on deleting most of them and saving the very best I consider what I am doing as "editing" rather than as "critiquing." It's a subtle difference at best but editing is when it is my work and critiquing is when it is yours :) I am, however and of course, critiquing my own work as I edit. When I do it in private I do not verbalize :)

In any case, folks have always enjoyed watching me edit a folder of the day's images and in short order I carried the practice over from the seminars--I do only one or two a year at most--to the IPTs and folks have been loving it. They get to see why I keep what I keep and why I delete what I delete. Your perceptions were most interesting from me and got me to view the process from the student's perspective.

An interesting observation and one that came through in everything of his that I have watched and read and knowing that Artie and his late wife had a background in education makes me suspect that Artie taught as a vocation rather than just a job.

I recently read where one of his past students met up or contacted Artie and her comments about him and his dedication to ALL students made me aware that this man was put on this Earth to teach and to encourage folk who may be<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Document"><meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 12"><meta name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 12"><link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CUsers%5CChris%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5Cmsoh tmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><link rel="themeData" href="file:///C:%5CUsers%5CChris%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5Cmsoh tmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_themedata.thmx"><link rel="colorSchemeMapping" href="file:///C:%5CUsers%5CChris%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5Cmsoh tmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_colorschememapping.xml"><style>  </style> reticent to test and improve their abilities to do so without the fear of failure.

I have him to thank for getting me to start from scratch again as well as realizing that good glass is worth selling your kids off for medical experiments:) (The 500 f/4, Gitzo tripod and Wimberley arrive on Tuesday from Hunts) 300 f/2.8 in about three weeks.

I am hoping that the wife and myself can head off next year for a workshop or two with Artie in person.

Hey Chris, Thanks for your kind words. Here's what I have to say on the matter: during the middle 10 years of my teaching career I know that I was a far better teacher then than I am a bird photographer today... BTW, my average blood sugar for the past week is 84 which is PMP (pretty much perfect). (About two years ago it was 241). If things work out I might see you on the Midway IPT next spring.... Great stuff Artie, I knew you would get there, I am now only off two kilos from my target weight and am having a full check up including my eyes on Friday.

I have also discovered that I have a degree of Celiac Disease so adios bread which seems to have helped both blood sugar and gastric symptoms wise.

Who knows Artie we may hit our eighties yet:)

Having been in hospital for a week and reading your Midway Blog, we would love to join you next year there but I also have many relatives in Florida and may spend some months there next year.
