The Eland is one of the largest antelopes in South Africa. I had the option of trying to capture him in the long grass, thus not seeing all of him, or waiting for him to come out, but having the gravel road in the frame. Taken early morning as the sun came out in a nature reserve close to my house.

Nice environment image. You did well getting him before he went into the shadows, caught him in some nice light giving good detail. Did you make any images of him in the grass also? It might make an interesting image as well. TFS

After the last time, I better say nothing about the road:p

Good light on a magnificent animal.

Nice light on the eland Stu. Not much you can do about the grass.

I agree, great light so hard not to pass up.

My objection with the road is not that fact that it is there but that it turns left and leads out of the frame. Turning right would have been better compositionally. Waiting for the antelope to cross looks out as that side of the road is in shade.

The bird photographer in me says, go for the head/portrait image.

I like this image, especially the lighting. With all of the rain in the Serengeti recently, we lost a lot of opportunities for good images because the subject was hidden by tall grass. You are fortunate you could wait until your subject made it to the road.

Nice light Stuart and a great catchlight as a result.

Did you get any a couple of frames earlier as it was emerging from the longer grasses? That might have reduced or eliminated the road, whilst keeping the excellent light on that side of the road. Easier said than done when the animal is moving....

Hi Stuart I like it as presented, light is gorgeous and don't mind the road ! About all I could have wished is for the head to be a little higher to clear the grass line a bit .. understand it would have been impossible getting down !!!

I like the lighting and the pose. Healthy animal. Good to see different herbivore species from africa. I agree that a lower angle would have been even better.

Cheers,

I have to add respects for getting such a good-looking specimen in nice light; love the raised foot These big guys move deceptively fast, good work on the capture. Rietvlei sure delivers:)
