Bill,
I don't think HDR would necessarily be any better as the water and land would look like this to the eye. Clouds and sky look as they should.
The birds have a pronounced sharpening halo. Additionally, unless the bird flock is large I generally don't feel a few of our feathered friends in an image like this help. I would clone them out as the sunset stands on its own.
Again, as with the other image, I like the diagonal rays of sun light.

agree the halos came about when I reduced the size to fit the BPN and used USM - the birds add little -

Hey Bill,
yet another Dave Mills and Roman collaboration as I write this from Florida.....We both agree with Robert's assesment but will offer you one more option for you to explore.....crop about 1/3 of the sky into a pano.....that gives the birds a bit more prominance and adds yet another diagonal line to the overall scene. Just some food for thought. Sweet colors in the sky!
